Planning to Self-Publish an Ebook? Beware of Smashwords!
See on Scoop.it - eBook Writing, Publishing & Marketing

There are plenty of great reasons to self-publish, the most important of which is control. Did you know companies like Smashwords take your control away? (I’m and Indie Author because I want control over my books and distribution…”

Viqi French: This blog post rightfully warns ebook publishers to read the fine print VERY carefully re: book distribution deals. Smashwords is cited as the example of where you could be locked into an exclusive selling rights situation.

However, Smashwords isn’t the lone wolf in this kind of scenario. Read Apple’s terms very carefully as well, as with all other ebook selling systems…

Creating an iPhone Game – What Went Right, Wrong & The Results!
See on Scoop.it - Online Marketing Boutique

“The wife & I just finished creating our first iPhone game. It’s been a year in the works. But here’s what went wrong …

Knowing virtually nothing about the subject, we went at it with an idea: Let’s create a game about our dogs. They’ll catch frisbees. It will be easy and fun, like the hit iPhone game Paper Toss, where you throw crumbled paper at a trash can. This was a good model to follow, I thought…”

Viqi French: Blogger Josh Grillo writes an engaging account about his venture into iPhone game app development. He tells of lots of fits and starts, but finally reaching the goal — and seeing early signs of sweet success.

This is a good read. It will benefit anyone wanting to get an app developed. You’ll know more about some pitfalls to avoid — and the potential pay-off if you stick with it.

Book Reviewers for Hire Meet a Demand for Online Raves

See on Scoop.it - eBook Writing, Publishing & Marketing

“The growing business of self-published books has spawned an industry in which hired reviewers produce favorable online reviews…”

Viqi French: What a compelling story at New York Times about an online book review service for ebook self-publishers.

If you’re writing an ebook or marketing an ebook, you’ll derive great value from this article.

Interestingly, this also teaches quite a lesson re: reputation management — and the damage that one disgruntled customer can potentially do a Web business.

Infographics As Link Bait May Soon Provide Diminishing SEO Returns
See on Scoop.it - SEO Daily Dose

Eric Enge of Stone Temple Consulting interviewed Google’s Matt Cutts about what makes a quality website.

The interview primarily centered on SEO and delved into link building, #brand building, link profiles, content differentiation, Panda, Penguin and others and Matt’s comment about Infographics.

“I would not be surprised if at some point in the future we did not start to discount these Infographic-type links to a degree. The link is often embedded in the Infographic in a way that people don’t realize, vs. a true endorsement of your site.”

Infographics As Link Bait

Infographics have long been developed as link bait and often include embed code to easily add them to a website. The embed code itself usually contains a follow link in it and can lead to the creation of dozens, hundreds or thousands of inbound #links to a website.

Matt doesn’t dislike Infographics. In fact, he says, “In principle, there’s nothing wrong with the concept of an Infographic.”

It’s the lack of attribution transparency that concerns him and Google. He also warns about publishing other’s Infographics on a site that links to an unrelated site.

Link building for the sake of SEO is a dying art. Producing lots of great content that people want to consume, share and evangelize will have the secondary effect of creating inbound links.

That is the best, most natural way to do #SEO today.

Ultimately, if you produce a crummy Infographic with embed code for links, you may not see any SEO benefit at some point in the future. However, if you create a stunningly beautiful Infographic with hard-hitting data that naturally gets shared and evangelized, normal link attribution will most likely be the result.

The Adversarial Relationship Between Google and SEO
See on Scoop.it - SEO Daily Dose

“At the start of 2011 I wrote a post about the relationship between Google and SEO. Specifically, I made the case that Google is not an ally of SEO, but is our enemy…”

Viqi French: A very insightful, persuasive opinion piece. It’s always struck me odd that Matt Cutts — Google’s #1 communicator to the Web publishing community — has a job title called “head of spam.”

So, as Barry brilliantly points out, we’re ALL spammers, as we are constantly trying have our Web content behave a certain way. Priceless…
